Sample program

Rio de Janeiro and Iguazu Falls in 6 days: a sample group program

Two nights in Rio de Janeiro with Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, a flight of about two hours to Foz do Iguaçu, then three nights by the falls: the Brazilian side, the Argentine side across the border, and a day for the Itaipu dam or a Macuco Safari boat. It is a starting point for travel agencies and organizers of groups from about 10 people: we adapt it to each group and send a priced proposal within 24 hours.

The program at a glance

Day Plan Night
1 Arrival at Galeão (GIG) or Santos Dumont (SDU), transfer, group dinner Rio
2 Christ the Redeemer, lunch, Sugarloaf cable car Rio
3 Flight from Galeão to Foz do Iguaçu (IGU), Brazilian side of the falls Foz do Iguaçu
4 Border crossing by coach, Argentine side of the falls Foz do Iguaçu
5 Itaipu dam or Macuco Safari boat Foz do Iguaçu
6 Transfer to Foz do Iguaçu airport

Day 1: arrival in Rio

A driver meets the group in arrivals with a sign showing the group or agency name, at Galeão (the international airport, with two terminals) or Santos Dumont. Guests on different flights get separate transfers. In the evening the group has dinner at a restaurant booked for it.

Day 2: Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf

The group goes up Corcovado on the train from Cosme Velho or in the official Paineiras Corcovado vans. Neither the monument nor Paineiras has parking, so the coach drops the group at the boarding point. The escalators at the monument are being replaced until about the end of May 2027. Meanwhile Tijuca National Park allows half the usual number of visitors at the top at one time, and everyone climbs the last 80 stone steps. The stair-climbing equipment for people with reduced mobility does not run in the rain, so we ask about it in advance and book the group’s slots early.

After lunch, the Sugarloaf cable car climbs from Avenida Pasteur 520 in Urca in two stages, stopping on Morro da Urca. It runs in the rain, though strong wind or lightning can stop it for a while, and we confirm last boarding for your date. The 4-day Rio program covers both visits in more detail.

Day 3: flight to Foz do Iguaçu and the Brazilian side

Direct flights from Rio to Foz do Iguaçu take about two hours, and LATAM flies the route from Galeão. Flights are not part of the ground program: send us the flight numbers and we time the transfers and park visits around them. A morning flight leaves the afternoon for the falls.

Two national parks share the falls, both UNESCO World Heritage sites: Argentina’s Iguazú National Park since 1984 and Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park since 1986. UNESCO describes a semicircle about 2,700 m across with drops of up to 80 m.

On the Brazilian side the coach parks at the Visitor Center on the BR-469, km 18, and the bags stay on board. Park buses take the group to the Trilha das Cataratas, a walk past viewpoints that ends on a walkway facing the Garganta do Diabo. The classic visit takes about two hours.

Day 4: the Argentine side

The coach crosses the Tancredo Neves bridge to Puerto Iguazú and spends the day with the group. The Upper and Lower circuits of the Argentine park are open. Garganta del Diablo is closed: on August 3, 2026 the park began removing its walkways ahead of the floods forecast for September and October. In mid-September the closure was announced for at least 40 days with no reopening date, and in early October the river was running high again. We check the status for your dates.

Day 5: Itaipu or Macuco Safari

Each option takes about half a day. At the Itaipu hydroelectric plant, every visitor goes through X-ray and metal-detector screening.

Itaipu tour Length What to know
Itaipu Panorâmica about 1 h 10 Every day, a bus about every 30 minutes; the outside of the plant, two lookout stops, audio guide in Portuguese, English and Spanish
Itaipu Especial about 2 h 30 Every day, limited places; inside the dam and powerhouse, including the central control room; from age 14, official photo ID, shoes closed at the heel, no bags, check-in 30 minutes early

Macuco Safari is a boat trip inside the Brazilian park: about two hours in all, 25-30 minutes of it on the river, with boats about every 20 minutes (9:00-17:00 on weekdays, 8:30-17:00 on weekends). The park ticket is sold separately, and the park’s 2- and 3-day passes save up to 50%. A private boat needs at least four paying guests and an advance booking.

Day 6: departure

The coach takes the group to Foz do Iguaçu airport in time for each flight, home or back to Rio.

Border crossing with a coach

Before each international trip, the coach company issues a licence from ANTT, Brazil’s land transport regulator, with the passenger list and the border crossing on it, so we need the final names in advance. Argentina takes biometric data from every traveler on entry and exit. Most travelers need a passport; citizens of Mercosur countries and associated states can use the national ID card on Argentina’s official list, unless their nationality needs a visa. Canada’s travel advice recommends allowing time for the border, crossing before nightfall and taking care in the tri-border area, so we plan the return in daylight.

Luggage and health

The Brazilian park has lockers (85 x 55 x 65 cm) that can be booked online, and Itaipu Especial admits no bags. CDC recommends yellow fever vaccination for travelers aged 9 months and older going to Rio de Janeiro or Iguaçu Falls; Brazil does not ask for a certificate on entry, and travelers should check with their doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need passports for the Argentine side?

Yes, for most groups. Argentina takes biometric data from every traveler on entry and exit. Citizens of Mercosur countries and associated states can use the national ID card on Argentina's official list instead of a passport, unless their nationality needs a visa.

Is Garganta del Diablo open?

The Argentine park began removing the walkways to Garganta del Diablo on August 3, 2026 as a flood precaution, and in mid-September there was still no reopening date. The other circuits are open, and we check the status for your dates.

Are park tickets included?

Tickets for both national parks are quoted in the proposal. Both parks sell timed tickets online, and after you confirm we book them for your group's date and entry time.

Which language does the guide speak?

We confirm the guide's language in the proposal. Our team works with you in English or Portuguese.

Do we pay anything before we confirm?

No. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal, and you pay nothing before you confirm.
