Destination weddings and marriage proposals in Rio de Janeiro

We arrange symbolic wedding ceremonies, marriage proposals and couple photo sessions in Rio de Janeiro for couples and wedding planners abroad: the place, the providers, the permits, and transfers and rooms for your guests. Send us the date and your idea, and you get a priced proposal within 24 hours.

Updated:

What we arrange

We plan the day around your idea and take care of:

  • a symbolic ceremony on a beach, at a viewpoint, on a boat on Guanabara Bay, or in a restaurant or venue, with a celebrant, decor and music;
  • a marriage proposal: the spot, the timing and a photographer who stays out of sight until the moment;
  • a couple photo session, before the wedding or instead of one;
  • dinner after the ceremony, or a party;
  • your guests: airport transfers, rooms and a welcome dinner (see group transfers).

For each part we pick vetted local providers (photographer, celebrant, decor, venue, boat) and stay in touch with them and with you until the day. You deal only with us and receive the provider details after you confirm.

Places in Rio

Sugarloaf, Corcovado, Tijuca National Park, the Parque Lage mansion and the beaches from Leme to Leblon all belong to one UNESCO World Heritage site, “Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea”, inscribed in 2012.

Place What it offers What to know
Sugarloaf (Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar) “Amanhecer”: you go up before the park opens to the public, watch the sunrise with live saxophone and have breakfast Buy at least one day ahead, by 17:30; the park can cancel it for weather
Mirante Dona Marta, Tijuca National Park A viewpoint at 360 m over Sugarloaf, Guanabara Bay, Corcovado and the Maracanã Open daily, 8:00-17:00
Vista Chinesa, Tijuca National Park A lookout built in 1902-1906 over the South Zone and the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon Open daily, 8:00-17:00
Parque Lage An estate protected by Iphan, Brazil’s heritage institute; the mansion houses the School of Visual Arts, founded in 1975 A Tijuca National Park site
Arpoador 800 m of seafront between the Copacabana Fort and Ipanema; Riotur, the city’s tourism office, recommends its rocks for the sunset A public beach, so city rules apply
Guanabara Bay A private boat with crew for the ceremony or a sunset proposal Sized to the guest list

Permits

Who grants permission depends on who runs the place:

Where Rule
Tijuca National Park, run by ICMBio Events need an ICMBio authorisation requested at least 100 days ahead, and ICMBio may charge a fee. Photos where and when the park is open to visitors need no authorisation; a shoot before 8:00, after 17:00 or in a closed area needs an image authorisation, which is free. External events at the top of Corcovado are suspended while the escalators at the Christ are replaced, until about the end of May 2027.
Sugarloaf Commercial photography or filming needs the park company’s prior authorisation. Drones and large items such as tripods are not allowed.
Botanical Gardens Photographers working for a fee, for example on couple shoots, register with the visitor centre (Portaria JBRJ 28/2025).
Beaches and streets The city’s events decree (Decreto Rio 53.105/2023) does not cover wedding ceremonies in private areas, or small photo sessions on public streets that block no traffic or pedestrians, set up no equipment and use no seating. Other events are requested online at least 7 working days ahead (events of up to 300 people). Filming in public areas goes through the Rio Film Commission, also 7 working days ahead.

The proposal lists the permits your plan needs, and we or the provider apply for them.

Getting legally married in Brazil

We organise the symbolic ceremony and the celebration. A civil marriage is a separate legal procedure. In outline, according to official sources:

  1. It takes place at a civil registry office (cartório de registro civil) and starts with the habilitação. If your documents are in order, the registrar publishes the notice online and issues the certificate within 5 days; the marriage is then held on the day, at the time and in the place you request and the registrar sets (Law 6.015/1973, art. 67).
  2. A foreign partner presents documents proving age, marital status and parentage, with a sworn translation (tradução juramentada) and registration at a registry of titles and documents, according to the civil registry guide of the Federal District court (TJDFT).
  3. Brazil has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since August 14, 2016, so public documents from other member countries carry an apostille.

Check the requirements and timing with the cartório and with a lawyer in your country, including how your country recognises a marriage registered in Brazil. You can also marry legally at home and hold the ceremony in Rio.

When to plan it

Season Day / night, °C Rain
December to March 28.6-30.2 / 22.4-23.5 Rainy season; January is the wettest month
April and May 26.4-27.8 / 20.4-21.9 April is still in the rainy season; May is a transition month
June to August 25.2-25.6 / 18.4-18.9 The driest months, August most of all
September to November 25.0-27.4 / 19.2-21.4 Rain comes back; the rainy season starts in November

Temperatures: INMET averages for 1961-1990, published by the World Meteorological Organization. Rain: the city’s Alerta Rio service (1997-2024), which counts November to April as the rainy season.

The busiest dates are New Year’s Eve (December 31) and Carnival, with the Special Group parades on February 7, 8 and 9, 2027. Over New Year 2025-2026, hotels were 87.01% full across Rio and 91.83% in Copacabana and Leme (HotéisRIO); before Carnival 2026 the city passed 91%. For a wedding on or near these dates, we book the venue, the boat and the photographer as early as we can. See New Year’s Eve in Rio and Rio Carnival.

How we work with you

  1. You send the brief (see the list below), and a person from our team replies the same working day.
  2. You get the proposal within 24 hours: places, providers and their roles, permits, guest logistics, price and terms.
  3. You have one contact on our team from your first message to the day after. On the day, a coordinator from our vetted providers is on site, as set out in the proposal.

More in how we work.

What we need from you

  • The date, and how flexible it is.
  • What you plan: a proposal, a symbolic ceremony, a photo session or the full celebration.
  • The number of guests, and whether they need transfers and rooms.
  • The setting you have in mind, the language of the ceremony and your budget level.
  • For a proposal, whether it is a surprise.

Guests, planners and terms

We also handle your guests: airport transfers, rooms and a welcome dinner. For 50 guests or more we work together with a large local receptive partner, and you keep one contact on our team. Wedding planners abroad get net rates or commission on request: see for travel agencies. Our fee is already included in the price. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm. For New Year’s Eve and Carnival dates, our deposit is non-refundable once you confirm, because places are booked for you.

Write to us with your date and your idea.

Frequently asked questions

Is a symbolic ceremony legally valid?

No. A symbolic ceremony is not a civil marriage. The legal marriage is a separate procedure at a civil registry office (cartório) in Brazil or in your home country, so check the requirements and timing with the cartório and a lawyer in your country.

Can the proposal stay a surprise?

Yes. Only one of you deals with us. We agree on the place, the time and a signal with the photographer, who stays out of sight until the moment.

What if it rains on the day?

For an outdoor plan, the proposal includes a rain option: a covered place or another time. If the weather rules out the date, we move it or refund our deposit in full.

Which language is the ceremony in?

We confirm the language of the celebrant and the photographer in the proposal. Our team works with you in English or Portuguese.

Do you work with wedding planners abroad?

Yes. You keep one contact on our team, get a proposal within 24 hours and can ask for net rates or commission.
