Sample program

Rio de Janeiro in 4 days: a sample program for groups

A four-day Rio de Janeiro program for groups of about 10 to 200 people: airport transfers, Christ the Redeemer, Santa Teresa and the historic center, the Sugarloaf cable car and a free last morning. Travel agencies and group organizers can quote it or send it to their clients as it is, and we adapt it to each group and send a priced proposal within 24 hours.

Updated:

The program at a glance

Day Morning Afternoon and evening
1 Arrival at GIG or SDU, group transfer Copacabana and Ipanema seafront, welcome dinner
2 Christ the Redeemer Santa Teresa, Selarón Steps, historic center
3 Sugarloaf cable car, Urca Guanabara Bay boat, Maracanã tour or beach
4 Free morning Transfer to the airport

Day 1: arrival and the beaches

A driver meets the group in arrivals with a sign showing the group or agency name. Groups land at Galeão (GIG), the international airport, which has two terminals, or at Santos Dumont (SDU), close to the center. People on different flights get separate transfers by arrival time.

Driving time to Copacabana and Ipanema depends on traffic, so the proposal gives it for your flights. For groups coming off a cruise ship, the Píer Mauá terminal operator puts Galeão 16 km away (about 25 minutes without traffic) and Santos Dumont 2 km away.

After check-in, or before it if the rooms are not ready, the coach runs along the seafront of Copacabana and Ipanema so the group gets its bearings. The day ends with a welcome dinner at a restaurant booked for the group.

Day 2: Christ the Redeemer, Santa Teresa and the historic center

Christ the Redeemer goes first because both ways up run on booked time slots, and an early slot keeps the rest of the day free. The group’s coach cannot drive to the monument itself: on the Tijuca National Park road, the official vans are the only transport allowed to reach it. A group goes up one of two ways.

Corcovado train (Trem do Corcovado) Official vans (Paineiras Corcovado)
Boarding Station at Rua Cosme Velho 513 Copacabana (Praça do Lido, by Posto 2), Largo do Machado (metro exit A), Paineiras visitor center
Hours Daily 8:00-18:00, a departure every 20 minutes Copacabana and Largo do Machado 7:00-16:00; Paineiras 7:30-18:00, last access 17:00
Ticket Round trip and access to the monument Round trip from the same boarding point and access to the monument
Arrival Check in at the ticket office at least 40 minutes before the booked time Arrive 15 minutes before the booked time
For groups Group tickets booked with the operator for a set day and time Timed tickets for the whole group; no parking at Paineiras

Both operators warn that hours can change because of weather or operations. The train station has no luggage storage, so bags stay on the coach.

Until about the end of May 2027 the escalators at the monument are being replaced, and Tijuca National Park has halved the number of visitors allowed at the top at one time. The last 80 stone steps are climbed on foot; people with reduced mobility can use stair-climbing chairs, which do not run in the rain. We book the group’s slots early and ask in advance about anyone who may need the chairs.

From Corcovado the group comes down to Santa Teresa for lunch. The Selarón Steps run between Santa Teresa and Lapa: more than 200 steps covered in thousands of tiles by the Chilean artist Jorge Selarón. The afternoon ends with a guided walk through the historic center, on a route set out in the proposal.

Day 3: Sugarloaf and Urca

The Sugarloaf cable car starts at Praia Vermelha, Avenida Pasteur 520, in Urca, and climbs in two stages: first to Morro da Urca, then to the top of Pão de Açúcar. The first stage opened in 1912 and the second in 1913. The park is open every day. Last boarding is between 18:30 and 19:30 depending on the day of the week, and we confirm it for your date. The cable car runs in the rain, though strong wind or lightning can stop it for a while.

The park sells two tickets that help with groups: Fast Access, with priority lines at every station, and a guided visit with a bilingual park guide. We quote them if the group wants them.

After lunch in Urca, the group chooses how to spend the afternoon:

  • a boat on Guanabara Bay;
  • the Maracanã stadium tour, which we check against the football calendar for your date;
  • free time on the beach.

Day 4: free morning and departure

The last morning is free. Hotel pickup times follow each flight, with separate transfers if the group flies out at different hours. Groups that stay longer can add a day out of Rio or switch to the six-day Rio and Búzios program.

What is included in the proposal

  • A coach, minibus or vans sized to the group and its luggage.
  • A local guide, with the guide’s language confirmed in the proposal.
  • Arrival and departure transfers.
  • Entrance tickets as quoted: the Corcovado train or the official vans, and the Sugarloaf cable car.
  • Restaurant bookings for the welcome dinner and the group lunches.
  • One contact on our team from your request until the group flies home.

Our fee is already included in the price. A local provider we have vetted delivers each service, and you receive the provider details after you confirm the booking. More in how we work.

Options we can add

  • Dinner with a samba show.
  • Samba rehearsals in January. LIESA, the league of samba schools, holds free technical rehearsals at the Sambadrome on January 23, 24, 30 and 31, 2027. The schools also hold weekly rehearsals at their own halls (quadras), many of them open to the public.
  • Dinner at a churrascaria.
  • A guided favela visit with a local guide.
  • An extra day in Búzios or on Ilha Grande, with group transfers arranged by us. Since June 1, 2026, Angra dos Reis has charged visitors a tourism fee that also covers Ilha Grande, and we include it in the quote.

Season notes

  • New Year’s Eve falls on Thursday, December 31, 2026, and January 1, 2027 is a national holiday. Last time, charter buses, minibuses and vans were barred from Copacabana and Leme from 00:00 on December 31, so we plan drop-off points outside the closed area. More on the New Year’s Eve page.
  • Carnival 2027: the Special Group parades at the Sambadrome are on February 7, 8 and 9, and the Champions Parade is on February 13. More on the Rio Carnival page.
  • Cruise season: CLIA Brasil puts the 2026/2027 season on the Brazilian coast from October 31, 2026 to April 9, 2027, with Rio among the embarkation ports. For groups joining or leaving a ship in Rio, we time the program around it.

Group size and terms

The program works from about 10 people. Groups of 50 and more are handled together with a large local receptive partner, and you keep one contact on our team. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal; you pay nothing before you confirm.
