Sample program

A day in Rio for cruise groups: sample shore programs

Three sample formats for a group whose ship calls at the Píer Mauá cruise terminal in Rio de Janeiro, from a full day with Christ the Redeemer to a few hours in the port district, plus a plan for embarkation and disembarkation days with transfers to Galeão (GIG) or Santos Dumont (SDU). Every timing works back from the ship's all-aboard time, and we send a priced proposal for your ship and date within 24 hours.

Updated:

The formats at a glance

Format Time ashore What the group sees

C. Short call About 3-4 hours The port district on foot and by VLT light rail
Turnaround day Set by the flights Terminal to Galeão (GIG) or Santos Dumont (SDU) with luggage, optional tour

Planned around all-aboard time

We work backwards from the ship’s all-aboard time. In the samples below the ship is alongside from 8:00 and all-aboard is at 17:30, so the group is back by 16:00 with 90 minutes in hand. For your call we use the real times. The terminal is the Terminal Internacional de Cruzeiros do Rio de Janeiro at Píer Mauá, Avenida Rodrigues Alves 10, in the Porto Maravilha port area. It has areas set aside for coaches and tourist vans, and we agree the meeting point with you before the call.

The terminal’s 2026/2027 schedule (version of September 3, 2026) lists 127 ship calls on 85 days between October 24, 2026 and April 8, 2027. Four ships are due on January 26, 2027, with room for about 10,000 passengers, and three ships on eight days, among them February 7, 8 and 9, the Carnival parade nights at the Sambadrome. On those dates we book timed tickets earlier and allow more time for the drive back.

Format A: Christ the Redeemer, Santa Teresa and the historic center

Time Plan
8:30 Guide meets the group outside the terminal; coach to Cosme Velho
9:00 Check-in at the Corcovado train station, Rua Cosme Velho 513
9:40 Train up to Christ the Redeemer
11:40 Train down, coach to Santa Teresa
12:15 Lunch at a restaurant booked for the group
13:45 Selarón Steps, then the historic center
14:30 Walk through the center and along the Orla Conde waterfront to Praça Mauá
16:00 Back at the terminal

The train runs daily from 8:00 to 18:00, a departure every 20 minutes, and passengers check in at least 40 minutes before the booked time. The station has no luggage storage, so bags stay on the coach. The alternative is the official vans (Paineiras Corcovado), the only transport allowed up the Tijuca National Park road to the monument; they board in Copacabana and at Largo do Machado from 7:00 to 16:00.

Until about the end of May 2027 the four escalators at the monument are being replaced, and Tijuca National Park has halved the number of visitors allowed at the top at one time. Everyone climbs the last 80 stone steps. Stair-climbing chairs for people with reduced mobility do not run in the rain or on a wet floor, so tell us in advance if anyone may need one.

The Selarón Steps, between Lapa and Santa Teresa, are more than 200 steps covered in thousands of tiles by the Chilean artist Jorge Selarón.

Format B: Sugarloaf and Copacabana

Time Plan
9:00 Meet outside the terminal, coach to Urca
9:30 Cable car from Praia Vermelha, Avenida Pasteur 520
11:30 Copacabana seafront
12:30 Lunch at a restaurant booked for the group
14:45 Back at the terminal

The cable car climbs in two stages, to Morro da Urca and then to the top of Pão de Açúcar. The park opens every day, with opening and last boarding times that vary by weekday, so we confirm them for your date. It runs in the rain, though strong wind or lightning can stop it for a while. On busy port days we can quote the Fast Access ticket, with priority lines at every station.

Format C: the port district on foot and by VLT

For a short call, everything is close to the pier:

  • Praça Mauá and the Boulevard Olímpico, next to the terminal.
  • The Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow), a science museum: Thursday to Tuesday 10:00-18:00, last entry 17:00, closed on Wednesdays. Tickets are for a set hour.
  • AquaRio, a marine aquarium with 4.5 million liters of water and 350 species: daily 9:00-17:00, last entry 16:00.
  • The Valongo Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2017, where enslaved Africans were landed from 1811 onwards. Pedra do Sal is close by.

VLT Line 1 links Parada dos Museus, Parada dos Navios and Utopia AquaRio with the center and Santos Dumont airport. There is no cash on board; one Jaé card pays for several people, so the guide carries it. On a Wednesday we swap the museum for AquaRio or a ride into the center.

Embarkation and disembarkation days

CLIA Brasil lists Rio among seven Brazilian embarkation and disembarkation ports for the 2026/2027 season, which runs on the Brazilian coast from October 31, 2026 to April 9, 2027.

On disembarkation day the guide meets the group outside the terminal and the suitcases go into the coach or a separate luggage vehicle. The group goes straight to the airport or tours first, usually Format B, with the bags locked in. The terminal operator puts Galeão 16 km away, about 25 minutes without traffic, and Santos Dumont 2 km away. The VLT also reaches Santos Dumont, but it does not take bulky items that block the aisle, so with suitcases we go by road.

On embarkation day we collect the group at the airport or hotel and drop it at the terminal within the cruise line’s check-in window. The terminal has check-in counters and X-ray screening for checked and carry-on bags. For a few days in Rio before the cruise, see the 4-day Rio program; vehicles and meeting points are on the group transfers page.

For a priced version, write to us with the ship’s name, the date and times of the call, the number of people and any flights. See also group trips, for travel agencies and the other sample group programs.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the guide meet the group?

Outside the cruise terminal at Píer Mauá, at a meeting point we agree with you before the call. Send us the ship's name and its times in port with your request.

How much time do you leave before all-aboard?

In these samples the group is back at the terminal 90 minutes before all-aboard time. For large groups or days with several ships in port we leave more, and the proposal shows the exact times.

Which language does the guide speak?

We confirm the guide's language in the proposal. Our team works with you in English or Portuguese.

Can the group tour Rio with its luggage on disembarkation day?

Yes. The suitcases stay locked in the coach or in a separate luggage vehicle while the group is out, and the day ends at Galeão or Santos Dumont in time for the flights.

Do we pay anything before we confirm?

No. Terms and payment are set out in the proposal, and you pay nothing before you confirm.
